City Trip

What? On Monday the 20th of November we went on a city trip to the Canterbury Museum, Te Puna o Waiwhetu(the Christchurch Art Gallery), and we went on a city walk.

So What? On the city walk it was kind of like a scavenger hunt and we found a picture with a knife and fork and a piece of cheese kind of shaped like toast. In the Art Gallery we had some activities to do like draw a picture of our favourite sculpture in the Len Lye section. At the Museum we learnt about how the Maori survived and how they made fires and drills.

Now What? If I could change it, the change would be to go to the botanical gardens and not have to walk for so long.

Athletics

On Tuesday and Wednesday we had Kauri Athletics. A challenge I faced on athletics day was high jump because I did not think I would make it, but I did - only the first two or three.
My favourite event on the day was long jump because I couldn't really hurt myself, and I think it was the best event EVER!!
Something I am proud of is high jump.

Availll

WHAT: I have enjoyed the AVAILLL(Audio Visual Achievement in Literacy, Language and Learning) programme so far, and particularly doing an activity called Last Word. Last Word is where we have the subtitles on while watching a movie. The teacher in the classroom will pause the movie at a particular time and everyone will write the last word that they saw on the screen in the subtitles. At the end in marking, you get half a point for getting the right word and half a point for spelling it right.
Here is a picture of my Last Word activity for the movie Meet the Robinsons.

C.A.R.E Values, Week 8, Term 3

WHAT?
My goal is to develop the consistent use of our CARE Values towards all the people I interact with and for myself.

SO WHAT?
  • My strengths are in being a community minded person because I DO NOT like to leave rubbish lying on the ground. In class I do not distract anyone from their learning, and I am consistently on the green light.
  • I have achieved my bronze certificate.

NOW WHAT?
  • I am going to work towards washing my hands with soap and water and drying them because I do not dry them properly.
  • I am going to do this by using the hand dryer, even though sometimes it may take ages.

P.E/Sport Programme Term 3

WHAT?
For PE/Sport my goals were to use:
  • Positive relationships with individuals or groups.
  • Positive teamwork

SO WHAT?
PE: Relationships with individuals and groups

I can work in a group with anyone in my year level or team because I listen to what others suggest and DO NOT say "Nah, that's a rubbish idea. We shouldn't do that", and try to carry it out.

PE: Teamwork
I can interact confidently with others in a team. I was able to identify ways we could improve when it felt like we were not playing as a team.  I could also listen carefully to advice from others to help us improve our game and how we worked as a team. An example is when in influenza, me and Rose were hiding, and a group of girls asked if we wanted them to tell us if the taggers were coming, and we listened and said "yes, please".

NOW WHAT?
  • I will practice being positive if we are on the losing side.
  • I will help plan our strategy and encourage others to plan too.

Art Attack Blog, Week 5, Term 3

WHAT?
For art attack my goal was to produce a piece of art related to our local landscape using paint.

With Mrs Marsh I learned about foreground, midground and background in landscapes.
With Mr Forman I learned about what colour is and complementary colours.
With Mr Rule I looked at the different landscape features of Canterbury and Banks Peninsula.

SO WHAT?
  • Some features I included were hills, a pond, a fish, and a flower.
  • I used dry brushing for some of my painting, and how I would have done it if I didn't know dry brushing existed for the rest.
  • I enjoyed making the outside of my pond because I made it all squiggly, and I like making things squiggly.
  • I am proud of how my hills turned out, and the colour of them because it was a nice, mineral colour, which was how I wanted it. My hills looked quite nice when they were dry brushed.
  • I found doing the fish in the pond difficult because I had to be very careful about where I put my paint brush so that I didn't get the paint where I didn't want it. I found sketching it easy because all I was really doing was tracing.

NOW WHAT?
  • I would like to do paint again if I did another landscape because I think my first painting turned out well with paint, and I just need to improve my pictures/sketches.
  • I would like to get better at showing foreground/ the front of the picture because my flower wasn't nearly as big as my tree, which was in the mid ground/the middle of the picture, and my flower was in the front of the picture/foreground.

My Learning Goals for Term 3

What?

I have been identifying my literacy goals for the start of term 3.
My reading teacher is Mrs Marsh.
My writing teacher is Mrs Marsh.

So What?

My handwriting goals are to flick and link letters neatly and I am still learning to use cursive.

My spelling goal is vocabulary development.

My writing goal is to identify the structure and features of a moment in time/descriptive writing, and to plan our moment in time using our senses.

My reading goal is to understand what the author has written in a paragraph to help us make a sensible prediction on what will happen in the next paragraph.

Now What?

My blog goals are:
To proofread and edit my blog post before publishing.
To use a variety of ways to show my learning (text, photos/images, video).
To do a ‘Can Do’ blog about an achievement, some other learning or something i am proud of.

Term 2 Highlights

Some things I have enjoyed this term are:
Passion Project because I could do it with my friends and on anything I want to, as long as it's related to learning.
Writing my information report because I got to do it on what ever I wanted to do it on, and I did it on Roblox.
Silent reading because I love reading, as long as it's not out loud!

Music

What? IALT: Create a four line rap, and gradually make it longer.

So What? I have learnt that usually raps rhyme.

Now What? My next step is to make an eight line rap.

Dance

What?
IHBL: A hip hop routine, and to combine different movements in to a dance routine to Treasure by Bruno Mars.

So What?

I really enjoyed doing the robot.
My favourite dance was the hip hop.
I found the robot the most challenging.
What I enjoyed most about Dean’s teaching was that he made learning fun.
I feel quite confident with the dance routines we learned.
I was able pick up the different dance routines quickly.
I found remembering the correct sequence for the dance routines easy and fun.

Now what?

I would like to do further dance lessons because dancing is fun!

Maths

What?
I have been learning to solve subtraction problems by using equal additions from a tidy number.

So What?
I have learned that when you have an equation like 73 - 28  = you can either add the same number to both sides, or you can subtract the same number from both sides.
I feel that I am confident at this activity. So I give myself a thumbs up:)

Now What?

My next step is to use this strategy independently, without using a piece of paper, or a whiteboard.

Writing

What? My goal is to write in paragraphs so that my stories make sense.
So what? I have learnt that you start a new paragraph when there is a new speaker, a new place, a new time, or a new topic/idea.
Now what? My next step is to put 4-7 sentences into a paragraph because sometimes I put more than 4-7 sentences in a paragraph.

Reading

What? I am learning about our new literacy programme.
So what? I do reading on Tuesdays and Thursdays and I do SML on Mondays and Wednesdays. I do writing after I have done fitness, which is after reading and SML.
My reading teacher is Mr Rule,
My writing teacher is Mr Forman,
My SML teacher is Mrs Marsh.
Now what? My next step is to in the SML class, not to get distracted so that I will get more time on my Passion Project.

Statistics

What? I am learning to complete a statistical investigation.

So what? I have learned that the steps in the Statistical Inquiry Model are:
1. Identifying a question to survey
2. Conducting the survey, recording data
3. Collating data and showing results in graph form
4. Interpreting results and presenting findings.

Now what? Something I have learned from gathering my data is out of KFC, Fish'n chips, McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza, Subway, and Other. Other seems to be the most popular.

Reciprocal Reading

What? I am learning about reciprocal reading.

So What? I have learned that reciprocal reading involves students being leaders. Everyone is expected to contribute.

Now What? Two areas I want to better at are prediction and clarification.

Te Reo Maori

What? We have been learning language about Ko Au which means Me, Myself, and I.

So What? Something I have learnt to say is Ko Aoraki te maunga (My mountain is Aoraki )

Now What? My next learning step is to say my whole Mihi without reading it.

ANZAC Blog 1

What?  I am learning about Anzac Day as it is an important part of our learning about ‘Being a New Zealander’

So What?

Two things I know: ANZAC Day is on the 25th of April. Mrs McLeod's Granddad went to war.

Two things I would like to know: How war started? How many soldiers came back?

Two things I have learned: My Great Granddad came back from the end of World War 2. There was poisonous gas used.

Now What?

I would like to learn more about the weapons used in war because to me they sound interesting.

Keeping Ourselves Safe

What? I am learning to make safe decisions.

So what? I am learning this because I need to learn how to keep myself safe in some situations.

Now what? An example of a safe decision is if someone comes up to me when I am at the park or walking around and they asked me to come help find their lost dog, I would say 'No' and walk away.

Cloze activity reflection

What?
I am learning how to do a cloze activity to help me with my reading
Being able to make logical predictions about what word would fit correctly into a sentence is a successful read`er strategy.

So What?
We use the following procedures:
  1. Read the whole text so that we can get an overall picture of the text.
  2. Re-read the text and think of words that would fit into the gaps. Write them down
  3. Look at the word list for this activity and see if I am correct / make changes

Now What?

I am at the following stage:

P = I need a little help. I prefer to look at the word list rather than have a go to predict the missing words. I have some confidence.

My next step is to move to A = I am independent. I read the text, select words that I feel logically and grammatically fit, and then I use the word list to confirm my predictions and / or make some small changes.
